- The Chesapeake
Bay Retriever
- At the beginning of the 19th
century, ancestors of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever arrived on the
coast of Maryland from England by way of Newfoundland.
The Chesapeake Bay is noted for ducks and geese which were
numerous enough to sustain commercial hunting. This big, strong
dog with its waterproof coat was ideally suited to the frigid
waters of the bay where it could retrieve as many as 200 ducks a
day, a true working dog. He was considered by many to be the ultimate water
dog. Chesapeakes are one of only a few truly American
breed.
